At Rogers Gardens we find that most problems with plants are connected to improper watering.

Below are a few tips that may make things easier.

Water before 11 a.m. to prevent evaporation which occurs during the hottest part of the day. Morning is better than evening, when the dampness encourages growth of fungus, slugs & snails.

Water long enough to really soak the roots. A light sprinkling evaporates quickly and encourages shallow root systems and weaker plants. Allowing the soil surface of the soil to dry between watering allow necessary oxygen to be absorbed by the roots.

Drip irrigation is the most efficient watering setup to save money and time and keep plants looking their best. When using a sprinkler we suggest an inch of water per watering. Place tuna cans randomly to measure water distribution in different areas.

If hand watering for trees and large shrubs we recommend 5 to 10 gallons of water at the drip line per watering.
For annuals, perennials, and smaller shrubs we suggest a good thorough soaking to encourage deeper root systems.

Just remember to adjust your watering schedule as temperatures change.

Over Watering:
Soil is constantly damp
Leaves turn a lighter shade of green or turn yellow.
Young shoots are wilted.

Under-Watering:
Soil is dry.
Older leaves turn yellow or brown, and drop off.
Leaves are wilted.
Leaves curl.
